In Kindergarten at Saint Raymond School, students begin to develop their love of learning and school. Through tailored lessons, individual explorations, and structured play, our Kindergarten students start cultivating a sense of independence and establish skills that will aid them toward emotional, spiritual, academic, and social success. By actively participating in events such as field trips, Career Day, Special Person’s Day, Christmas Around the World, Moms and Muffins, Dads and Donuts, school-wide service projects, and school Masses, our kindergartners explore the concept of community.

First Grade

Throughout 1st Grade, our students strive to master basic facts, skills, and concepts in order to receive a strong academic foundation that will be built upon in the later grades. In mathematics, the students master addition and subtraction facts to 10 while being exposed to facts up to 20. Units in English, science, and social studies focus on exciting concepts and themes that introduce the students to a variety of different topics. The curriculum-aligned field trips that the first graders attend correspond with these topics to help supplement the students’ studies. In writing, the students use Writer’s Workshop to focus on “small moments” non-fiction, fiction, and opinion writing styles. To nurture both independence and teamwork skills, students have opportunities to work individually and in groups. A music-class opera performance and a first-grade led Special Person’s Day Mass also allow students to practice public-speaking skills.

Second Grade
-
Our 2nd Grade students expand their fluency, comprehension, writing, and math skills by learning exciting new concepts in mathematics, writing, and reading, and they are introduced to cursive. In writing and reading, students are exposed to new writing styles such as narrative, scientific, opinion, and poetry. They not only read and hear various examples of these styles, but they also begin utilizing these writing styles through the writing curriculum. By performing in the Stone Soup Play, the students also have the opportunity to learn play-script structure and to practice public speaking. In mathematics, students start working with larger sums and differences by adding and subtracting using regrouping. They translate these skills to both traditional and word problems. In 2nd Grade, students deepen their Catholic faith while studying in religion class and participating in the sacraments of Reconciliation and Communion.
