The St. Raymond Quiz Bowl Team is open to all 6th–8th graders who like fast-pace trivia and exciting competition! Our Coach this year is Coach Kreb, our veteran coach since 2006!
Please provide Mrs. Kreb with the emails/contact information that you would like her to use.To contact Mrs. Kreb, please email: [email protected]
The cost to participate is $50, which includes a Quiz Bowl T-shirt and entrances fees to some of the Quiz Bowl Tournaments. Register here.
Practices will be in Coggins Hall on Mondays for 6th graders and Tuesdays for 7th and 8th graders. If changes occur, you will be notified. All practices are during lunch and recess. Students should get their lunch/milk and proceed downstairs to Coggins Hall. They will eat at the beginning of practice. Students are expected to attend the practices, especially when there is a tournament coming up. If there is high demand for a tournament, it will be filled with students who attend practices.
When invited to a tournament, parents of eligible students will be contacted via email, so please be sure to read your email. Some tournaments are grade-specific. Please respond ASAP if your student can commit to attend. Usually, tournaments fill very quickly. For tournaments with very high interest, a lottery will be done with students who have committed by a certain date.
If your student commits to attend a tournament, they are expected to attend due to entrance fees required. Some tournaments will have waiting lists with which can be filled given some notice. Families will know when this is the case.
There are several bowls coming up later in September and October that the teams will be participating in. There are meets scheduled at Notre Dame and Loyola. Others include Northwestern University, St. Viator, and more. Students can participate in as many tournaments as fit into their schedule.
Most tournaments are all day on a Saturday. There are some exceptions to that. St Viator has a fall 8th grade tournament and a spring 6th/7th grade tournament that are held during the school day, typically for about four hours. Notre Dame High School hosts a tournament on a Tuesday in October after school, usually from about 4:00-7:00 PM. We also host a history bee and a science bee, which will be after school. You will get details on all of these as they come up.
Transportation: Students are not transported via bus. Just like any other St. Raymond activity, parents need to transport their students to and from tournaments. In the past, car pools have been organized so that all parents do not need to drive to each tournament. Please volunteer and take a turn when you can.
Volunteers: Parents are needed to help coach/chaperone teams. At some tournaments, we are allowed to enter multiple teams. Each team must have a chaperone. Volunteer chaperones will be given a folder with the student name plates, release forms, score sheets, and playing order. Chaperones are not required to make decisions regarding student playing order; it will be done by our coach, Mrs. Kreb.
Students will receive a Quiz Bowl shirt. They will need to wear this to all tournaments. In cold weather, ONLY a St. Raymond sweatshirt may be worn (no sweatshirts from area high schools, colleges, pro teams, or any others will be allowed).
Most quiz bowl tournaments only allow substitutions at half time. Most tournaments play 4 or 5 students at a time and have caps of 6-10 students per team. That means that almost always your child will play at least half of each game. Playing time is based on performance at practices and at past tournaments, NOT their performance in their classroom. Students need to earn more playing time. Quiz bowl performance is based on speed, recall and knowledge of different subject areas and topics.
Teams are often divided into an A Team, B Team, and so forth. Once again, students have to earn their place on each team. The A team is the most competitive and they are usually trying to qualify for nationals. This team could have any mix of students on it from 6-8th grade. They will not have equal playing time as it is highly competitive and they play to win. Different students may participate on the teams from tournament to tournament depending on performance.
The C and D Teams have less competitive pressure, and may be a good fit for some students. Moving from these teams to higher-level teams may take some students more time, depending on their interest. Almost all 6th graders and new students will begin on the lower teams.
All students must have a completed participation/release form to be able to participate in a tournament. These will be emailed to you.
